EDMOND HALLEY

Edmond Halley, the English astronomer, mathematician, and inventor, was born as the son of a wealthy soap maker in a small town near London in 1656 and died in 1742. While Halley did not have quite as large a role in pushing the Copernican Revolution forward as some of the others, he stands with Rheticus as vital all the same. Halley’s work provides a fitting kind of capstone to the lines of thinking at the heart of that revolution.

Halley worked with Newton in developing theories of gravity and on understanding the forces that would keep planets in motion. He also played an important role in editing Newton’s great masterpiece, the Principia, and getting it published.
